The journey between Madurai and Rameswaram is not that long and there are three routes that you can take to complete the journey. The shortest route is via National Highway 87. This journey can be completed in about three and half hours. To take this route, you need to follow the National Highway 85 and National Highway 87 till you reach Achundanvayal. Once you are on National Highway 87, you need to continue till you reach GP road.
The tropical climate of Rameswaram makes it an accessible destination all year around. The climatic conditions are not severe which means that you can plan a trip here anytime and you will manage to enjoy yourself. The best time to come here is during winter. The months between November to February are apt mainly because it's cool and you can travel without any worry of the heat. The minimum temperature here during winter is around 17 degrees C and that is pleasant. Summers could get hot with temperatures going as high as 38 degrees C. Since this region does not receive very heavy rainfall, you can plan a trip here during the monsoons too.
There are three major routes from Madurai to Rameswaram. The fastest route is via National Highway 87. If you have about half an hour in hand, you can also take the MDR 637 and National Highway 87 route. Another route is via MDR 926 and National Highway 87.
The road between Madurai and Rameswaram as well as rameshwaram to madurai is very decent. There are no toll booths along the way. You will come across a number of small villages so the speed of your vehicle cannot be too fast.
